This is the first recording of a set of six quartets out of the thirty or so by Telemann that came down to us. When this CD appeared, N.A. wrote in Gramophone "the style is uniform, the writing is skillful and the idiom of that 'galant' phraseolgy which we associate?with Telemann's chamber music?.Telemann scored the works for flute, violin, viola and bass but? American Baroque introduces the distinctive timbre of triple harp instead of a harpsichord in some of the movements. The resulting colours are attractive?ensemble and intonation are excellent throughout and the players make much of the music's delicately wrought textures and fine tracery?enthusiastically recommended?" And George Chien wrote in Fanfare "the performances here are consistently engaging. The sound is well balanced and clean and, and the excellent notes are informative and well written. This will be of special interest to Telemaniacs, but can be recommended to all." And Tom Vernier wrote in CD Review "Telemann's quartet music shines and sparkles, full of contrast and an energetic mixing of timbres? The vivacious playing attests to the performers' depth of joy and satisfaction in the constant change and motion of Telemann's little compositions." Additional highly positive reviews were receive in Alte Musik Aktuell (Germany) where the CD earned Recording of the Month award and in the French magazine Traversieres.
