Extolled by Chopin as the equal of Beethoven and Mozart among the keyboard immortals, Hummel is rarely programmed today and most of his piano sonatas remain unrecorded. Here is a sampler of his best pieces, performed by Australian early-music specialist John Khouri. Mr. Khouri made his debut playing early piano at Hertz Hall, UC Berkeley, in 1980 and gave his first solo recital in 1983. Since then, he has played over 130 solo piano works from C.P.E. & J.C. Bach to Chopin and early Liszt and over 50 chamber works with strings, winds and two pianos performing in Northern & Southern California, Australia and the UK. John Khouri has made eight recordings?3 on the Entracte label, and 5 for Music & Arts, covering solo keyboard works of Clementi, Beethoven, Dussek, and Weber. Two further CDs await release, the 27 Chopin Etudes (1832 Broadwood), & 4 late sonatas by J.B. Cramer (1813 Broadwood).
