The pre-eminent French conductor of his era, Pierre Monteux enjoyed a lengthy and unusually eventful life. This was the man who worked with Colonne (a close friend of Berlioz), who met Brahms, who made music with Saint-Saens, who collaborated with Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky and who championed the avant-garde in all phases of his career. The main work on this album, which Ravel subtitled "A Choreographic Symphony," was premiered by Monteux in June 1912 as a Diaghilev Ballet Russe spectacle. We have it here in a magnificent live performance with the Concertgebouw, along with a song cycle by Ravel which Monteux never recorded commercially.
