"Less well-known than the Lucerne performance [of the Beethoven Violin Concerto] of the same year, it is however finer, because the Orchestral is more responsive to Furtwängler's direction--fiery, majestic and capable of utter repose. Menuhin never played better than this. The other work is the live performance of Bach's Third Orchestralestral Suite, largely dismissed by the writer of the notes as 'a period piece'. If so, I prefer that period to any other. Music-making at this exalted level makes one re-examine the standards by which one normally judges, with alarming but salutary results."
