For many Duke Ellington fans the years 1951 through 1955 form a black hole in the half-century career of the great composer/bandleader. The reasons are fairly obvious. At the end of January 1951, alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, since 1928 one of the most distinctive voices in the Ellington orchestra, handed in his notice advising Ellington he was about to form his own small group. And to make matters worse he'd be taking with him two other long-time band veterans, drummer Sonny Greer, one of the original "Washingtonians," who'd been with Duke from the very beginning and trombonist Lawrence Brown, an Ellington sideman since 1932. Many saw this as the end of Duke Ellington's bandleading career. How could the band survive without such key men? But Ellington, ever the optimist, reacted in typical Ducal fashion. "New men mean a new sound in my band and the creation of new music," he informed a Down Beat reporter. The change that had been forced upon him offered a rare creative challenge, as proven in this priceless historic sound Document which features some of Ellington's greatest hits in spirited, highly expressive performances.

PAUL WHITEMAN CONDUCTS GEORGE GERSHWIN
Live

Day; They Can't Take That Away From Me; Nice Work If You Can Get It; Love Walked In;
Second Rhapsody (with Roy Bargy, piano); Clap Your Hands; Do It Again; I Got Rhythm;

There was a period in the 1920's when Paul Whiteman was much better-known than the
up-and-coming George Gershwin. Whiteman's band leading career began after World War I:
within a short period of time he had some major hit records on the charts and he was being
billed as "The King of Jazz" although "King of Jazz Age" would have
been more accurate. For about a decade, he was the most famous bandleader in the world,
heading a huge variety of orchestra which played, in addition to viable jazz, show tunes,
novelties, vocal ballads, symphonic jazz and the compositions of George Gershwin. Whiteman
commissioned and premiered Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue as well as the Concerto in F and
remained a lifelong advocate of Gershwin's music, even using the main melody from Rhapsody
in Blue as his theme song.
One day short of the one-year anniversary of George Gershwin's death, Paul Whiteman performed a concert in tribute to his friend in Hollywood; the first half of this CD is drawn from that radio broadcast. The second half includes other rare and authoritative renditions of Gershwin's music by musicians closely associated with his times. Not to be confused with a recent collection of Paul Whiteman's commercial recordings, also produced (like this set) by the eminent Canadian transfer engineer David Lennick (Efrem Productions, Toronto), this CD features exclusively rare, non-commercial broadcast transcriptions by Whiteman. Liner notes by Scott Yanow, editor, All Music Guide to Jazz.

KNOTS with THE KEVIN NORTON ENSEMBLE
Critic Ben Ratliff (writing in The New York
Times, June 5, 1998) described a live appearance by The Kevin Norton Ensemble:
"Mr. Norton, a drummer and vibraphonist, is one of the most valuable moving parts of
downtown jazz, and this sextet does justice to his brainy, tricky compositions with their
built-in patches of swing". This recording features the celebrated klezmer and
jazz clarinetist, David Krakauer. DDD Total Time:

The wildly adventurous music on this album is performed by two of the best California
improvisers on the scene, and now their work can be experienced simply as a polished and
imaginative performance. On the other hand, this music and its performers are situated in
a particular political tradition of music-making, and this music will say more and,
indeed, mean more if its social context is understood. Miya Masaoka is a composer,
performer, and performance artist at the center of the Asian American new music scene in
San Francisco. Trained on the Japanese koto, she has extended the instrument's
possibilities not only through her base in jazz and new music but also through the
innovative application of computer electronics. George Lewis is a composer, renowned
trombone player, computer music specialist, and professor of improvisation and critical
studies at the University of California, San Diego. Their mutual interest in the interface
of technology and improvisation has consistently opened up new musical possibilities.
