The appearance of new scores of Bruckner's symphonies in the 1930s as part of the Complete Edition project motivated a number of recordings from German labels. Electrola, HMV's German affiliate, led the way with recordings of the Robert Haas editions of the Fourth and Fifth symphonies, in 1936 and 1937, conducted by Böhm with the Sächsische Staatskapelle. Telefunken, Electrola's junior rival, countered with the Fifth Symphony in Haas's edition under Jochum, recorded in the Hamburg Musikhalle on June 3/4, 1938. Jochum had earlier led the first performance by the Berlin Philharmonic of the Haas score. The present release, never before on CD, documents the first in a long series of recordings of a Bruckner symphony, by this great interpreter of the Austrian conductor's work. It is a profound reading, carefully compared and contrasted with Jochum's later recordings in the lengthy analytical notes by Mark W. Kluge. Technical reconstruction by Maggi Payne.
