Description
Das Lied von der Erde was first performed after the composer’s death by his friend and protégé Bruno Walter in Munich, in 1911. It is presented here in one of his most fiery and impassioned performances, with two exemplary soloists, captured in FM broadcast sound.
“Nikolaide has the perfect voice for the work… Her feeling and sound are nothing short of glorious and she, too, gives the unquenchable belief that she is a mother earth figure who knows everything.”
High Performance Review: Summer 1992: Bert Wechsler
“The vivid clarity and fierce contrasts of colour and rhythm once again give the lie to the strange notion sometimes encountered in this country that Walter was too soft and yielding a musical personality to make a first-rate Mahler conductor. There is an exciting urgency and at the same tome a subtle ebb and flow”.
