Buzz: Conductor James Dixon wrote in connection with the original CD release: “The essential art of Dimitri Mitropoulos was to be found in his live performances. Although he was no stranger to the recording studio, he best revealed his interpretive insights in the presence of a concert audience. Two hallmarks of his music-making immediately come to mind: the conductor, in full command of his craft and with intimate knowledge of the scorer, interacting with the orchestra and the ambiance of a live audience; and the spontaneous level of communication inspired by the ambiance. Indeed, Mitropoulos’ gift was one of communication: a fervent, yet disciplined projection of elegant style and musical line, emanating from his inner zeal via a responsive orchestra, ultimately to a responsive audience. I hope that those who hear these recorded documents can, by extension, listen as though they belonged to the … [live ]audiences, to whom Mitropoulos felt such an obvious bond.”
