Description
This set surveys the work of the Austrian violinist who from 1927 to1939 led the string quartet named after him that pioneered such major 20th century masterpieces as the 3d and 4th String Quartets of his brother-in-law Schoenberg, Bartok’s 5th and 6th Quartets, Berg’s Lyric Suite, and Webern’s String Trio and Quartet. The collection includes the original Kolisch Quartet’s magisterial 1936/7 interpretations of Schoenberg’s String Quartets, all 1950 Dial recordings of works by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern with the Pro Arte Quartet led by Kolisch, and live concert performances of works by Schubert, Schoenberg and Bartok with Kolisch given between 1940 and 1947 and released here for the first time.. Detailed notes on the man and the music by Russell Sherman, Will Ogdon, and Tully Potter.
