BUZZ: This recording celebrates the Silver Anniversary of the Center for New Music at the University for Iowa. Founded in 1966, its ensemble has toured widely as one of the outstanding contemporary music ensembles in the U.S. The Center has supported a number of residences of well-known composer whose works have been performed and premiered on the University of Iowa campus, such as Charles Dodge, Morton Feldman, Lukas Foss, Salvatore Martirano, Roger Sessions, and Charles Wuorinen. This recording includes two works especially commissioned for the Silver Anniversary, the first by Joan La Barbara (b.1947) well-known for her experimental compositions with extended voice, the other by the Center’s founder Richard Hervig. The collection reflects a wide spectrum of new music, from the advanced serialism of the late William Hibbard to the sophisticated electronic tape collage of Robert Paredes.
