Description

This collection brings together a number of American piano trios composed between 1915 and 1979. All of the music is rare, with the Cowell and Creston performed from manuscripts. The major piece, Creston’s 1979 Trio, Op. 112, was commissioned by the Mirecourt Trio, which gave its world premiere on 15 April 1980. That performance was videotaped for public television as part of a documentary, “Paul Creston Meets the Mirecourt Trio,” shown nationwide by the Public Broadcasting System.

Now in its 23rd year, the Mirecourt Trio has become one of the world’s most cherished and respected ensembles, both for its superb command of the classic piano trio repertoire, as well as for its adventurousness in expanding the literature with at least 80 new and commissioned works. Their Music & Arts recording of works by Lou Harrison (CD-635) was selected as “Record of the Year” by the Village Voice, and their recording of the Tchaikovsky trio was cited as a “Recording of Special Merit” by Stereo Review. Their series Trio America on Music & Arts has elicited much praise. Arved Ashby wrote of Vol. I (CD-4686) in American Record Guide, “The Mirecourt are once again entirely inside the musical idiom… a wonderful release.” And David Hurwitz raved in Fanfare about Vol. II (CD-4687), “Superbly performed… recommendable… to the those interested in contemporary American music…”
