Hungarian Melody, D 817; Moments Musicaux, Op. 94, D 780 Allegretto in C minor, D 915
3 Klavierstücke, D 946; March in E major, D 606
Listeners may find in Schubert’s music a sense of unrequited longing that the Italian scholar Angela Carone called a “not yet” quality; this sense of “becoming” resounds throughout Schubert’s 3 Klavierstücke. The six miniatures that eventually became known as Moments Musicaux suggest a range of moods and character sketches which Mendelsohn referred to as “songs without words,” anticipating his own.
