Description

This recording consists of selections from a concert that took place in the Mills College Concert Hall on 16 September 1996 commemorating the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music. It is also a Memorial Tribute to David Tudor and Tudor’s mentor, John Cage.

Cage’s musical pluralism clearly resonates with the aesthetics of Pauline Oliveros, the guiding spirit of the Deep Listening Band. Cage believed that we are all free at any time and in any place to listen, in a musical way,  to the sounds that are around us.

Oliveros views the multiplicity of sounds around us as a “grand composition” and she has dedicated herself to exploring and teaching the perceptual skills needed for appreciating this global “sound environment”. The practice of “deep listening” has been extended by Oliveros and her colleagues to focus upon not only the sounds of the external world, but also the more ephemeral sounds of our inner life.   Non Stop Flight creates its own diverse sonic landscape by bringing together three ensembles and guest artists: The Hub, a computer network  band (John Bischoff, Chris Brown, Scot Gresham-Lancaster, Tim Perkis, and Phil Stone), Oliveros’ Deep Listening Band, the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio, and other guest artists.
